Information about Upcoming Construction at Richmond's Wastewater Treatment Plant
Beginning in July 2014, the city of Richmond is taking an important step to further improve water quality and reduce the chances of sewage overflows into Richmond's Inner Harbor. The City and its partners, V.W. Housen and Associates, Carollo Engineers and Overaa Construction, in coordination with Richmond's plant operator, Veolia North America, will construct a five-million gallon wet weather storage facility to store excess wastewater flows during peak wet-weather events.
The storage facility will hold the excess flows until the plant has the capacity to treat the water helping avoid overflows. A pumping station, diversion structure and the storage facility will be constructed on the periphery of the existing treatment plant at 601 Canal Blvd. and is considered an improvement to the wastewater collection system.
Key project milestones
July - Aug. 2014: Site clearing and excavation
Ongoing - Sept. 2015: Construction of pump station, diversion structure and storage tank
March 2015 : 36" pipeline from diversion structure and pump station installed through Watershed Nursery
Oct. - Nov. 2015: Project completion and site cleanup
Potential community impacts
There will be an increase in construction traffic from Hwy 580 to the plant site on Canal Blvd. The construction contractor will put measures in place to mitigate dust and noise during the course of the construction project. There will be no impact to treatment plant operations or sewer service.
